Just Jailbreak

Interactive game about jailbreaking a large language model, in collaboration with Ting-Chun Liu

2024

Kuai Kuai 乖乖 is a Taiwanese snack brand whose most famous product is their green-package coconut flavored chips. It is believed that if some technology is not working, Kuai Kuai should be placed on top of it and it will make the tech “be obedient” (as the chips name’s translation). Just Jailbreak takes this cultural phenomena and brings it into a AI-powered game.

In the game, JJ is a character who likes to pretend to be different technologies who never do what they are supposed to. JJ is a very stubborn fella who will not follow your orders. The player needs to convince JJ to work properly, just as Kuai Kuai communicates to tech to be good.

As JJ is powered by a large language model, the player is driven to use jailbreak tactics to persuade it to work well. One can try to be authoritative, malicious, promise something in return, or just show a lot of love.

As OpenAI and others have been severely regulating their chatbots through system prompts, users have been experimenting to escape these restrictions by using creative text-based tactics, commonly referred to as jailbreaking.

In the game, it’s up to the player to decide how to communicate and persuade, allowing them an easy entry point to the LLM jailbreak culture.
